Procedures for Election to Membership of The Picturemakers

Y Llunwyr ~ The Picturemakers: a collective of artists working near Aberystwyth

From the Constitution :

“3.2 Election to membership shall take place at a designated meeting held annually as set out in ‘Procedures for Election to Membership of the Picturemakers’. The majority vote for election shall be 75% of those who vote. Voting will be by secret ballot organised by the chair. Members unable to be present at the meeting may use a postal vote via the chair provided they have seen the work submitted and read the relevant application.”

Procedure

All candidates should study the collective’s web site and familiarise themselves with the ethos of The Picturemakers and feel that they can personally identify with it. In their submission they need to convince the panel of that identification.

While we are indeed an exhibition group, such events are only one aspect of what we are about. Fundamental to everything we do is our desire to be mutually supportive, to give encouragement to one another in our regular discussions of our ‘work in progress’. Ideally each Picturemakers exhibition should take on the hallmarks of this collective experience.

As members we reflect an extraordinary diversity of backgrounds and interests, yet we are united in a common approach: that of using our individual experiences and observations to produce our images. In so doing each seeks to demonstrate what has impinged visually, as each tries to create out of what is to be found in their personal environment. We have no allegiance, therefore, to any genre, style, art theory or ideology, but we do believe that art has meaning.

Applications may be made once per year and intending applicants need to check the annual date accordingly which will be posted on www.thepicturemakers.co.uk

At the due date the applicant will provide the following :

1. A selection of 6 art works, as determined by the artist.

One page x A4 maximum of each of the following texts (2-5) :

2. The artist’s CV.

3. The artist’s current ‘Statement’

4. Any other information, such as exhibitions, collections or similar activities

5. The artist’s written response to the following questions:

5a) What do you think you could bring to the collective ?

5b) What do you feel the collective could do for you?

There will be TWO stages to the application:

Stage ONE will concentrate on the work submitted along with the information provided. It will be conducted in the absence of the applicant. (Applicants at this stage may be invited to provide further information if required.)

Only successful applicants from stage ONE will then be invited to take part in a stage TWO, normally at the next group meeting, in order to meet the members and discuss their application in detail.

Voting will take place after each stage as indicated above.
