Moira Vincentelli is Emeritus Professor of Art History and Consultant Curator of Ceramics at Aberystwyth University. Her teaching and research has had a focus on gender politics
and this interest has carried over into her fine art practice.
Since retiring from full-time teaching in 2011 I have been studying fine art – something I did not do in my initial academic studies. I undertook a BTec and Foundation course at Coleg Ceredigion and completed an MA in Fine Art at Bangor University in 2017. Over these years I developed an interest in figurative drawing and painting often incorporating elements of collage and photographic references. Much of my work has focused on the representation of women and in the last two years subjects have included, the refugee crisis, ‘the jungle’ at Calais and drawings of hijabis. In 2016 created a participatory project based on collaged postcards entitled ‘Refugee Messages’ and in 2017 I developed a video piece based on interviews with women talking about the hijab and substituting animated collaged drawings for the video image. Recently I have also been working on paintings based on dancers.
